Ah, the dreaded middle seat. Every frequent flyer’s worst nightmare. But it doesn’t have to be. While we can’t guarantee that sitting in the middle seat will ever be a pleasure, here are three tips that will definitely help you survive the experience.

Board early and claim some space. The last thing you want when sitting in a middle seat is to board last and find that both armrests, not to mention a sizeable portion of the legroom, is already spoken for. Try your best to be the first on the plane from your section, and make sure you’ve got enough arm and leg room to be comfortable.
Limit your luggage and store your carry-on in the overhead bin. Even if you pack light, space comes at a premium when it comes to airplane seating, and this is especially true of the middle seat. Do your best to pack light, and make sure to only have the bare essentials on you so you can store everything else in the overhead bin and make sure you have yourself some much needed space.

Bring a good book, and something to listen to. Distraction is one of the best ways to make any flight “fly” by, middle seat or otherwise. With that in mind it’s always best to bring some headphones and something you love to listen to, not to mention a great book or ebook reader so you can catch up on your reading list!
